In the era of seamless digital experiences, a robust and well-connected home wireless network has become more of a necessity than a luxury. The integration of smart devices, streaming media, and remote work demands a network infrastructure that can effortlessly handle the load. Recently, I embarked on a networking adventure, installing 10 Aruba Instant On-22 Access Points (APs) in a sprawling three-storey house. This article details the journey, challenges, and triumphs of turning a large residence into a connectivity haven.

Before installation client was using separate wireless access points and wireless range extenders, but with the mix of multiple devices on all 3 floors it was becoming very difficult to manage these wireless devices and wireless signals and wireless speeds were not stable with no roaming facility. So we evaluated various managed wireless solutions after which we decided to go with Aruba Instant On 22 which was best suited for the requirement.

Planning and Preparation

As with any significant project, a solid plan is the foundation of success. Mapping out the coverage areas, identifying potential dead zones, and considering the placement of the APs were crucial steps. Equipped with a floor plan and a clear vision of optimal coverage, I set out to make the home network a seamless experience across all three floors.

Choosing the Right Hardware

The Aruba Instant On-22 APs stood out for their combination of performance, reliability, and easy setup. Their sleek design and 802.11ac Wave 2 technology ensured excellent speed and bandwidth, essential for handling the demands of modern networking.

Installation Process

  • Strategic Placement: The key to a robust network is proper AP placement. I identified central locations on each floor, minimizing the number of walls and obstacles the signal had to penetrate. This involved climbing into attics, exploring basement corners, and measuring signal strength to guarantee an even spread.
  • Wiring Considerations: The APs supported both wired and wireless connections, but to maximize performance, I opted for wired connections wherever possible. Running Ethernet cables between floors and to distant corners was a meticulous but rewarding task.
  • Configuration and Setup: Aruba’s Instant On mobile app proved invaluable for configuration. Guided by the app, I followed a step-by-step process to set up each AP, configure SSIDs, and establish security settings. The app also allowed me to monitor the network health and make adjustments on the fly.

    Challenges and Solutions

    • Signal Overlap: With multiple APs in close proximity, managing signal overlap was a challenge. The Aruba APs’ intelligent power management and channel selection helped mitigate interference, resulting in optimal performance.
    • Cabling Complexities: Wiring the APs demanded meticulous planning and drilling. Employing cable management techniques ensured a clean and organized appearance, avoiding clutter and tripping hazards.
    • Configuration Hiccups: While the setup process was generally smooth, a few APs initially struggled to join the network. This was resolved by resetting and reconfiguring those units, underlining the importance of patience in the installation process.

    Triumphs and Transformation

Upon successful installation, the transformation was remarkable. Seamless roaming, consistent signal strength, and uninterrupted streaming became the norm. The entire household experienced the luxury of stable connections in every corner, whether in the basement workshop, the top-floor study, or the backyard patio.

    Conclusion

Installing 10 Aruba Instant On-22 APs in a vast three-storey house was not just a technical feat; it was an exercise in creating a connected environment that catered to the demands of modern living. The project taught me that meticulous planning, technical prowess, and perseverance can turn even the most daunting networking challenges into a success story. As technology continues to evolve, creating a robust and scalable network has never been more important, and Aruba’s solution proved to be a reliable partner in this endeavor.
